Hip Abduction Orthosis

Description: Pelvic section attached to adjustable hip joint with thigh cuff

Function: Limit hip range of motion (including hip abduction, flexion/extension); Can be set to limit ROM or to lock in single position

Indication: Hip fractures; Internal fixation; Hip replacement (prosthesis)

Include on Rx: Diagnosis, include ROM settings for hip flexion/extension and hip ABD 

Plastic Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)

Description: Full plastic thigh and lower leg sections joined together with double upright knee joints; molded to patient; Can be designed with locking knee joints

Function: Provides stability to knee and ankle

Indication: Patients with weakened lower extremity due

Conventional Metal Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis

Description:Double upright metal bars with knee joints and ankle joints; Ankle joints are attached to a stirrup that may be attached to shoe or footplate; Custom fabricated to tracing of patient’s leg; Can be designed with locking knee joints

Function: Provides control to knee and ankle joints

Indication: Patients with weakened lower extremity and fluctuating edema, sensory or visual impairment, unable to tolerate total contact of plastic KAFO or patient preference.

Function: Ligament protection

Indication: Moderate to severe ACL and/or PCL, MCL, and LCL instabilities

Osteoarthritis Unloading Knee Orthosis

Description: Double upright with knee joints; Varus/valgus adjustment

Function: Pain relief, unload medial or lateral compartment

Indication: Mild to moderate uni-compartmental osteoarthritis

Post-Op Knee Orthosis

Description: Thigh and calf sections with adjustable ROM knee joints

Function: Can be set to limit ROM or to lock in single position; Provides mediolateral stabilization

AFO - Solid Ankle

Description: Contoured plastic; Custom molded to patient model

Function: Maintains ankle in neutral position during all phases of gait; Subtalar stabilization

Indication: Foot drop/weak dorsiflexion and/or weak plantarflexion; Ligament injury about the ankle; Mild knee instability

AFO - Posterior Leaf Spring

Description: Contoured plastic; Custom molded to patient model

Function: Maintains ankle in neutral position during all phases of gait

Indication: Foot drop/weak dorsiflexion

Articulated (Hinged) AFO

Description: Two-piece plastic orthosis connected with joints at the ankle level; Molded over a model of patient’s lower leg and foot

Function: Medial/lateral stability and plantarflexion/dorsiflexion control; Typically used to allow dorsiflexion and limit plantarflexion by means of a
PF stop

Indication: Drop foot secondary CVA, peroneal nerve injury, etc.

Include on Rx: Diagnosis and ROM limits, if any

AFO - Floor Reaction  (a.k.a Ground Reaction)

Description: Two-piece plastic orthosis partially lined with aliplast with anterior proximal tibia support

Function: Accentuate knee extension moment at midstance; Prevent tibial collapse due to weak gastrocnemius soleus or quadriceps musculature; Crouch gait control

Indication: Applicable when patient has instability to ankle-foot complex, but has good or better quadriceps and balance (i.e. peripheral nerve injury, myelomeningocele, spinal cord injury, gastrocnemius trauma)

AFO - Patella Tendon Bearing Ankle Foot Orthosis (PTB-AFO)

Description: Custom ankle foot orthosis with anterior shell

Function: Decrease forces on plantar weight-bearing surface of heel

Indication: Heal ulcers; Calcanectomy; Plantar skin graft; Sever foot/ankle trauma

Include on Rx: Diagnosis

Description: Adjustable, custom fit AFO to relieve posterior heel pressure; Adjustable toe plated lined with washable fleece type material

Function: Help to control/prevent plantar flexion contractures; Unload posterior heel pressure

Indication: Plantar flexion contractures; Patients with (or at risk for) heel ulcers

Include on Rx: Diagnosis and extremity (left or right)

Plantar Flexion Night Splint

Description: Padded ankle foot orthosis to limit plantar flexion; Plantar flexion position adjustable

Function: Maintain and possibly increase dorsiflexion; Decrease plantarflexed position while resting; Not intended for use during ambulation

Indication: Treatment of plantarflexion contractures and plantarfasciitis

Indication: Tibia/Fibula fracture

Indication: Post operative stabilization or support
