Transfemoral Suction Socket

Description: Suction socket worn with residual limb in direct contact with socket, all air is evacuated out valve hole at medial distal end of socket to create negative pressure within the socket, a distal end valve prevents air from re-entering the socket until user presses release button.

Function: During swing phase of gait, negative pressure is created within the socket to hold the socket on residual limb; provides good preprioceptive feedback; decreased “pistoning” during swing phase of gait.

Indication: For patients with firm, mature residual limbs that are medium to long length; patient must have adequate balance and coordination to don prosthesis properly; contraindications: fluctuation residual limb volume.

Include on Rx: “Transfemoral Suction Socket”

Tes Belt

Total Elastic Suspension (TES) Belt

Description: Wide neoprene (or similar) waist –band lined with nylon material

Function: Belt fits around proximal part of socket and goes around pelvis and waist to suspend prosthesis

Indication: Used with suction socket or a primary suspension mechanism

Include on Rx: “TES Belt Suspension”

Silesian Belt

Description: Flexible soft belt usually made of cotton webbing, leather, or Dacron material and attaches to lateral wall of transfemoral socket, encircling pelvis and connects with a strap on anterior wall

Function: Aids suspension and provides some control of rotation; often used as an auxiliary to suction suspension

Indication: When additional suspension is needed

Include on Rx: “Silesian Belt”

Lanyard

Lanyard

Description: Lanyard suspension system

Function: Suspension of transfemoral or transtibial prosthesis used in conjection with a gel or silicone liner

Indication: Utilize when pin lock system not appropriate or personal preference

Include on Rx: “Lanyard System”

Gel Liner

Transtibial Prosthesis with Gel Liner & Locking Unit

Description: Gel liner worn against skin with attached pin that locks into distal end of prosthetic socket; suspension is created by intimate fit of liner next to skin

Function: Improved suspension and reduction of shear forces on residual limb

Indication: When improved suspension and reduction in shear forces is necessary

Include on Rx: “Transtibial Prosthesis with Gel Liner & Locking Unit”

Supercondylar SuspensionSupercondylar Suspension

Supercondylar Suspension

Description: Medial and lateral brims purchase over femoral condyles in transtibial prosthesis

Function: Provides increased mediolateral stability and better suspension for shorter residual limbs

Indication: When increased knee stability, rotational control and pressure distribution are required; shorter residual limbs

Include on Rx: “Supracondylar Suspension”

Supercondylar Cuff

Supercondylar Cuff Suspension

Description: Dacron webbing and/or leather; attached to proximal medial and lateral part of socket; strap encircles thigh proximal to patella and femoral condyles

Function: Suspend socket during swing phase; may provide moderate control hyperextension of knee genurecurvatum

Indication: Not appropriate for residual limbs with good knee stability and/or average length; not recommended for very short residual limbs; contraindicted if patella is not prominent

Include on Rx: “Supracondylar Cuff Suspension”

Suspension Sleeves

Suspension Sleeves

Description: Neoprene, silicone or latex rubber

Function: Sleeve fits over proximal part of transtibial prosthesis and rolls over patient’s thigh (proximal to prosthetic socks to contact skin) to create a sealed chamber

Indication: Helps eliminate or reduce pistoning during swing phase; may use as a means of suspending prosthesis; often used for auxiliary suspension during sports or other recreational activities

Include on Rx: “Suspension Sleeves”

Thigh Lacer

Joints & Thigh Corset

Description: Leather thigh lacer attached to metal side bars and hinged knee joints that attach to socket; often a posterior strap is added to control hyperextension of knee / genurecurvatum

Function: Provides maximum mediolateral stability; check strap also controls excessive extension of knee; can be used to partially unload residual limb

Indication: When maximum mediolateral and anteroposterior stability is required; knee joint stability; patients that perform heavy-duty work may benefit from added stability

Include on Rx: “Joints & Thigh Corset"
